There is a tendency to think about passenger charging as an isolated service. A practical facility that exists independently of the wider airport environment, providing little more than somewhere for passengers to replenish their batteries before boarding.

Yet this perspective overlooks something far more significant.

Every airport is, at its core, a carefully orchestrated environment designed to influence behaviour. From the location of security search areas and retail concessions to seating layouts, digital wayfinding and passenger communications, every aspect of the terminal is intended to encourage efficient movement, reduce uncertainty and create a journey that feels intuitive rather than complicated.

Against that backdrop, it is curious that charging infrastructure is so often considered in isolation. A passenger’s battery level is rarely viewed as an operational consideration, despite the fact that it increasingly influences how confidently people navigate the terminal, how they engage with digital services and, ultimately, how they experience the airport itself. As the aviation industry continues its digital transformation, this relationship deserves far greater attention.

The Operational Impact of Battery Anxiety

The aviation industry has invested heavily in digitising the passenger journey. Mobile boarding passes have become the norm. Airline notifications increasingly replace public announcements. Airport apps provide navigation, queue information and retail offers, while ground transport, lounge access and mobile payments all depend on the passenger remaining digitally connected.

The success of these services is often measured by adoption rates and customer satisfaction. Less frequently considered is the one factor upon which every one of them depends: sufficient battery power. Passengers who become concerned about preserving battery do not simply lose access to their devices. They begin to make different decisions.

Some reduce screen brightness and disable background services. Others avoid using airport applications altogether. Many interrupt their journey to search for available charging facilities, often remaining in one location for considerably longer than they had originally intended.

These are entirely rational responses to a diminishing resource, yet they subtly alter the way passengers move through the terminal and interact with the airport environment. Unlike queue lengths or dwell times, these behavioural changes are rarely measured. Nevertheless, they influence both operational efficiency and passenger perception.

Confidence Influences Movement

Behavioural science has long demonstrated that confidence shapes decision-making in unfamiliar environments. Airports are no exception.

Passengers who feel confident that they can recharge their devices quickly and reliably are more inclined to continue their journey as intended. They remain engaged with airline communications, make greater use of digital airport services and feel less pressure to interrupt their plans in search of power.

The availability of charging therefore contributes something that is difficult to quantify, yet immediately recognisable: reassurance. This confidence becomes increasingly valuable during periods of disruption, when passengers depend even more heavily on their devices for updates, rebooking information and communication with family, colleagues or onward transport providers.

In these moments, charging infrastructure moves beyond convenience and becomes part of the airport’s resilience.

Why Speed Matters More Than Availability

Historically, airports have measured charging provision primarily through installed capacity—the number of charging points available within the terminal. While understandable, this measure reveals relatively little about the passenger experience.

A charging point that delivers only a modest increase in battery over an extended period encourages passengers to remain stationary, effectively anchoring them to one location while they wait for sufficient charge to continue their journey.

Fast charging creates an entirely different behavioural outcome.

When passengers can recover meaningful battery capacity within a relatively short period, charging becomes a brief interaction rather than a prolonged interruption. Instead of occupying seating areas for extended periods, they are able to return to shopping, dining, working or simply enjoying the terminal environment.

The distinction is subtle, but operationally significant. The value lies not simply in providing electricity, but in reducing the amount of time passengers feel compelled to pause their journey.

Reliability Is an Experience Multiplier

Equally important is reliability. Passengers rarely differentiate between infrastructure that is unavailable because it has not been installed and infrastructure that has failed through poor maintenance.

From their perspective, both produce the same outcome. An inoperative charging point introduces frustration at precisely the moment passengers are most dependent upon it. Unlike visible infrastructure failures, however, charging faults often remain unnoticed until reported by passengers or discovered during routine inspections. This creates an interesting paradox.

As airports have invested in increasingly sophisticated operational technology capable of monitoring baggage systems, passenger flow and building performance in real time, charging infrastructure is frequently managed using inspection processes that have changed little over the past decade.

The result is that one of the most heavily used passenger services often remains one of the least visible operationally.

Rethinking Success

Perhaps this points towards a broader question. Should airports continue measuring charging infrastructure by the number of sockets installed, or should they begin evaluating the confidence, mobility and digital engagement that effective charging enables?

These are fundamentally different approaches. One measures assets. The other measures outcomes. As passenger expectations continue to evolve, this distinction will become increasingly important. Because the objective is not simply to provide places where passengers can charge their devices. It is to create an environment in which passengers remain connected, informed and confident throughout their journey.

Charging, viewed through this lens, becomes less about electricity and more about enabling the digital passenger experience that modern airports have worked so hard to create.
